Dr. Livingstone I presume?
May 29th, 2010Well, we have arrived in Africa.
With kick off still two weeks away, we were eager to take any opportunity to see a bit of Africa so after a whole four hours on the ground in South Africa, we trudged back onto a plane for the blessedly short hop up to Livingstone in Zambia (named of course for the famous adventurer). Our new home is a pretty cool hostel just a few km's from the falls. Fawlty Towers (yes really) is disappointingly well run with no sign of any stray hampsters or Spanish waiters. It's a strange feeling to stay somewhere and want it to be a chaotic mess.
Keen not to waste a day, we jumped a taxi down to the falls to check out the "Lunar Rainbow" which only occurs during the couple of days around a full Moon. Basically light from the moon hits the huge spray off the falls and a rainbow appears. Sounds fantastic right? Of course by the time evening rolled around a beautiful clear sky was choked with cloud and all we could make out was a vaguely white mist flying up from the canyon. Between the hiding moon and a lens left capped, any photo's taken were somewhat spoiled.
Victoria Falls by night.

Still, for our first night in country(ok, continent) it was still pretty awesome, and our trip back out the next morning didn't disappoint. Check out the photoblog for a few shots from the falls.

After the falls, we walked out on to the ZimZam bridge to enjoy the view and peruse the bungy facilities. We ended up getting was a lecture on Australian History from Paddy the Zimbabwian bracelet salesman.
Kevin Rudd speaks Mandarin, little Johnny was before him and then Keating. Bob Hawke drank too much (he even holds a record for drinking something or other) and was after Mr Menzies. No mention of why only Menzies get's the honorific though. Then came the verbal test. Who was the first PM? Who was the one that was lost? I told him we named a pool in Holt's honour byt the irony was lost. When was federation? Where are you from? Sydney. Ah in New South Wales. Have you been to all the 6 states and 2 territories? Even the ACT?
Oh and Mugabe is a bit crazy.
In the end I gave Paddy some cash and told him to keep the bracelet.
We are going to head back to the ZimZam tomorrow to perhaps throw ourselves off. Hopefully while attached to a bungy cord.
